What do I need to do to get started with the Self-Determination Program (SDP)?
Click your Regional Center below to find out how to start the SDP transition process. While every regional center works in their own way, the process is same for all regional center clients. The first step is to tell your regional center service coordinator that you want to start the SDP program.

I've completed the orientation modules and have my certificate, now what?
Once you have completed the orientation, send a copy of your certificate to your regional center service coordinator. Next, you will prepare or have an Independent Facilitator complete a person-centered plan (commonly called a PCP). The regional center pays the cost of an Independent Facilitator to assist regional center clients in transitioning to the SDP program so if you choose to hire an independent facilitator, the regional center will be billed for those services.

What Financial Management Service (FMS) options are available and where can I find out more aobut them?
There are 3 different models that the FMS companies use to pay for SDP services. These are: sole employer, co-employer, and bill payer. Not all FMS companies offer all of the models, and FMS companies vary greatly in their process and experience. It is important to understand what roles and responsibilities each of these models requires and to choose an FMS that has a good record of working successfully with SDP clients. Click this website to find the FMS companies available in your area to learn more.

How do I find an Independent Facilitator?
The SDPNetwork is a great resource for locating professional Independent Facilitators. You can also ask your service coordinator if they have any recommendations, and you can also find referrals in Self-Determination groups on social media platforms.

If i'm having a problem with the Regional Center or my SDP management or coordination, where can I find assistance?
As a regional center client, you always have the right to go to the Ombudsman with issues that arise either with traditional services or with the SDP program. If you are having difficulty getting services or support from the regional center, a regional center vendor, an independent facilitator, or an FMS company, you can contact the Ombudsman here to get assistance and support.
